In the year 1852, between 10th July and 5th August, Wagner embarks on his “Grand Tour of the Alps” on his own. He works on the Ring and flees from a new love: Mathilde Wesendonck. He is not ready yet to acknowledge these feelings. However the young wife of his friend Otto Wesendonck is constantly on his mind, and he writes numerous letters addressed to the Wesendonck family on this trip.
Wagner arrived at the Corno Gris Pass via the Grimsel Pass. Another option would be to start the tour in Airolo and to spend the first night in the cottage Corno Gries. The descent over Bettelmatt into the Formazza Valley ends at the Tosa Waterfalls. From there travellers will board a coach to Stresa, unlike Wagner who travelled by carriage, and ideally recovers like on the Borromean Islands like in Wagner’s time.
